Background & Experience
How did you get started in personal training?
I discovered my passion for weight training at the age of 14 when I was bought a first set of dumbbells and hit the gym as soon as I could, age 16. Witnessing the effect lifting weights had on my appearance and confidence it ignited a deep interest in fitness. By the time I was 18, I had developed a solid foundation and decided to turn my passion into a profession. I then embarked on my journey of personal training, earning qualifications, and learning more about the lifts. Starting at a young age has allowed me to grow alongside the evolving fitness industry seeing gimmicks come and go and see what works and what doesn’t, continuously refining my coaching approach.

Training Style
Can you describe your training philosophy?
My approach is centred around the principles of strength training, which is rooted in the idea of building strength through fundamental barbell exercises. I trust in the effectiveness of compound movements like squats, deadlifts, and presses to create a strong foundation. The emphasis is on simplicity, consistency, and progressive overload to ensure continuous strength gains.
How do you customise your training style for different clients?
While the core principles remain the same, there are a few considerations that need to be made when it comes to training different populations, such as choices in programming. I customise training programs based on individual needs and experience levels. I assess each client’s strengths and weaknesses to tailor the program. Whether someone is a complete novice, old, young, has specific goals like powerlifting or general fitness, I adjust the volume and intensity accordingly while keeping the focus on the basic lifts.
Success Stories & Challenges
Can you share a success story from your coaching career?
One story that has left a lasting impression on me is that of my client, Sue. Prior to embarking on her strength training journey under my guidance, Sue faced challenges with arthritis and knee pain that necessitated the installation of handrails throughout her home. Everyday tasks like getting out of the bath unassisted posed difficulties due to a lack of overall strength.
However, through consistent training and a focus on building her physical capabilities, Sue underwent a transformative journey. I am proud to share that not only has she gained significant strength, but she has also achieved newfound independence. The once-installed handrails have been removed, symbolizing her remarkable progress. Sue now navigates through these everyday tasks with ease, showcasing the incredible impact that dedicated strength training can have on people’s quality of life. It’s stories like Sue’s that reinforce my belief in the power of strength training to bring about meaningful and positive changes in the lives of my clients.
How do you help clients overcome challenges and stay motivated?
Whether it’s overcoming a plateau or dealing with motivation issues, I emphasize the importance of consistency and progress. Setting realistic, short-term goals helps clients stay motivated. Additionally, I ensure open communication to understand and address any obstacles they may be facing.
Fitness Journey
What are your personal fitness goals and routines?
My personal fitness goals are centred around my ambition to continue competitive powerlifting. I consistently follow a program focusing on progressive overload in squats, deadlifts, and presses. This allows me to progress my own strength but also helps me better understand and relate to the experiences of my clients. I am a firm believer that you can’t coach what you haven’t experienced yourself.
What advice do you have for someone just starting their fitness journey?
Prioritise consistency and focus on mastering the basics. Learn proper form on fundamental exercises and gradually increase the weight. Setting realistic goals, celebrating small victories, and being patient with the process are key to long-term success.
How do you stay updated with the latest fitness trends and research?
I regularly read reputable publications and engaging with the fitness community. However, I always approach new trends with a critical eye since I have seen several come and go over the years. I evaluate their alignment with the foundational principles of strength training before incorporating them into any coaching practices.
